Description:

Comparison of the changing intensities (scintillation) of Sirius vs. Jupiter. Scintillation occurs due to the changing refractive indices of the atmosphere at different heights, bending the wavefront of the star and causing the rays to converge and diverge. Stars scintillate much more than planets because stars are so far away that they are seen as pinpoints of light, while planets are seen as disks. The exposure time of the camera was set to 1 second, and the camera was moved in a straight line while taking the photo so that we could capture the changing brightness of the light from a star over this one second.
