Description:
Solar Cycle 25 has begun, and, at last, we’re beginning to see spots on the sun. Did you know these spots can be predicted in advance? Last week, on November 18, 2020, scientists at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) – whose headquarters are in Boulder, Colorado – predicted a large new sunspot group would emerge this week, just in time for Thanksgiving. The image below shows the spot as predicted, at 8:00 near the sun's edge. It’s called AR2786, and, faintly, just to the right, is sunspot AR2785.
