March 23, 2025

Equipment:

50mm homemade coronagraph

Description:

First amateur image of the K-corona outside of an eclipse, taken with a 50mm homemade Lyot-style coronagraph in a polarizing filter in deep red light. It required 20 minutes of video and almost half a terabyte of data. The K-corona is what you mostly see during a total solar eclipse, but it is elusive without an eclipse because it is about a million times dimmer than the photosphere just an arc minute away. This image exploits the fact that the K-corona is polarized.
