Description:
The Big Lick includes Hickson Compact Group 68 (HCG 68) on the right and NGC 5371 on the left. It is located in the constellation Canes Venatici near the handle of the Big Dipper. Follow the arc of the three stars of the handle to about 9 degrees south-southwest of Alkaid. The brightest star in the image is sixth-magnitude HIP 67778, which is easy to spot in binoculars and marks the position of the cluster. The image is a stack of 26 180-second subs at ISO 1600. I have identified at least 21 catalogued galaxies in this image, although many of them are very faint and can only be seen by stretching the signal. The five galaxies in HCG 68 are clearly visible and include NGC 5350, 5353, 5354, 5355, and 5358.
