Description:

NGC 40 (also known as the Bow Tie Nebula or C 2) is a planetary nebula visible in the constellation Cepheus, with a peculiar shape. Its diameter is about a light-year, and it contains a white dwarf star, the creator of the nebula, with a surface temperature of 90,000 K. This unusually bright star has the typical characteristics of a Wolf-Rayet star, and its strong stellar wind interacts with the nebula, deforming it into an irregular shape. Within a few tens of millennia, the nebula will disperse into the interstellar medium, freeing the central dwarf star, which will also slowly fade into space. Its distance from the Solar System is estimated to be around 11750 light-years.
