Description:

This is the California Nebula (also known as NGC 1499 or Sh2-220), an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. Its name comes from its resemblance to the outline of the state of California. This image, shot from our backyard observatory with an 8 inch Newtonian reflector represents 18 hours of exposure time, primarily through Hydrogen-alpha and Sulphur-ii filters for the nebula, and red, green and blue filters for the stars. The California Nebula lies about 1,000 light years from Earth.
