Description:

The Andromeda Nebula (Messier 31) is the largest neighboring galaxy to our Milky Way and is located about 2.5 million light-years from Earth. In Messier 31, the supergiant M31-2014-DS1 simply disappeared without exploding in a supernova, which is interpreted as a “failed supernova” and direct collapse into a stellar black hole. The image on the right shows the Andromeda Nebula with its spiral arms, bluish shimmering star clusters, and its two bright companion galaxies, Messier 32 and Messier 110. In the detailed image section on the left, the expected position of M31-2014-DS1 is marked with a dotted circle.
