Description:

What looks like a fairytale spire is actually a dense pillar of gas and dust rising within the famous Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula (M16), some 7,000 light-years away. Blue and golden hues trace ionized gas sculpted by energetic radiation, while the darkest regions harbor cold, dense dust where new stars are forming, protected from the intense ultraviolet light of nearby massive O- and B-type stars.
