Description:
This is the Pelican Nebula (also known as IC 5070), an H II region in the constellation Cygnus, associated with the North America Nebula (the east coast of which is visible in the upper left -- and which I am currently processing and will soon post). The gaseous contortions of this emission nebula bear a resemblance to a pelican, giving rise to its name. The image is a stack of 160 5-minute subframes collected over 3 nights of rare clear skies, between 8-31 and 9-2, from our La Jolla deck.
