Description:
20260303 Thermal vs. Visible Lunar Eclipse at different phases This image showcases five distinct stages of the 2026‑03‑03 lunar eclipse. The visible‑light portion was captured with a ZWO ASI585MC, while the thermal data was recorded using a 12 µm LWIR camera mounted on a large Newtonian. In visible light, the visible‑light images reveal a clean and detailed view of the lunar surface. As Earth’s shadow sweeps across the Moon, the highlands dim first, the maria deepen in tone, and the umbra introduces that subtle copper‑red glow caused by sunlight refracting through Earth’s atmosphere. Fine structures—rilles, ray systems, and delicate shading—stand out beautifully throughout the eclipse. The thermal view, however, shows a completely different Moon. As the surface cools rapidly in Earth’s
