Description:
The sun was very active yesterday, but a rare cloudy day in Alpine kept me from imaging it. Solar activity has decreased from high to moderate in the past 24 hours, but still plenty of flares. The most active sunspot region, AR3738, is disappearing off the Western limb, between 2:30 and 3:00 at the right edge of this image. AR3738 released an X flare yesterday, Bastille Day, causing shortwave radio blackouts that lasted from a few minutes up to 30 minutes. It was not the first X-flare to occur on Bastille Day. On July 14, 2000, the sun produced a spectacular show -- what one might call a text book space weather event!
