Upcoming Astronomy Events

As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.
You’ll also see online events offered here.
And if you’d like free copies of Sky & Telescope’s Let’s Go Stargazing flyer or door prizes for your next star party, you can fill out this form.

A hybrid meeting of Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society

Astronomy of Islamic Calendar

This presentation will discuss the history of lunar calendars from over 3000 BC to the present (21st century), explaining their principles, followed by the science and jurisprudence of Islamic calendars. It will conclude with the methods and annual data of moon sightings in the UK for the public benefit. It’s a must-attend for anyone interested in the history, culture, astronomy, and major world religions.

Our speaker Qamar Uddin is an electronics engineering graduate who has worked as a hardware and software design engineer for over 24 years in the scientific research/computing industry before changing careers to become a high school teacher since 2013 (after completing a PGCE training course with QTS).

He joined the York Astronomical Society in 2007 to develop his practical astronomy experience. He manages a network of crescent moon watch volunteers across the country, relating to the Islamic Calendar for the UK (including the dates of Ramadan and Eid)
