As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.

John Flamsteed : Pioneering Astronomy in Derby
Dive into the story of John Flamsteed and discover how he changed the way we see the stars!
John Flamsteed (1646–1719) was an English astronomer and the first Astronomer Royal. Appointed by King Charles II, he laid the foundation stone for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1675. Flamsteed spent his life mapping over 3,000 stars, ultimately revolutionizing navigation and celestial mapping.
Dr. Mike Lancaster is a prominent amateur astronomer and popular speaker associated with the Derby and District Astronomical Society. He is regularly presenting as a guest speaker at local groups, such as the Coventry and Warwickshire Astronomical Society and the Derbyshire Record Office he also has involvement with media appearances providing astronomy insights and commentary on regional stations like BBC Radio Derby.
