Although the truss-tube Dobsonian was introduced to amateur telescope makers 25 years ago, the design has rarely been used in anything but costly premium instruments in the world of commercial telescopes. That is until now. Meade’s line of LightBridge Dobsonians (8-, 10-, and 12-inch models are currently available, and a 16-inch is on the way) offer all the advantages of portability and performance inherent to the truss-tube design at a cost on par with budget-priced Dobs. Our full review of the 10- and 12-inch models (from $569) appeared in the October 2006 issue (page 80). We found them easy to store, transport, and assemble. The reviewer called them some of the most enjoyable telescopes he’d ever tested and “a dream for observers.”
