No single item in recent memory has had more of an impact on planetary imaging than RegiStax, developed by Dutch amateur Cor Berrevoets. By aligning and stacking multiple images obtained with inexpensive webcams and backyard telescopes, the program can create images that surpass even the finest ground-based views made a few years ago at professional observatories. In October 2006 Berrevoets released his much-awaited RegiStax 4. Among its newest enhancements is the ability to use multiple alignment points in an image, which greatly improves the software’s performance with solar and lunar images. Is it still a bargain? As freeware, how can it not be!
