Description:

The Witch Head Nebula – IC 2118. This faint nebula is likely a supernova remnant and is illuminated by the very bright star Rigel (out of frame). It resembles the silhouette of a witch’s head with a pointy chin. All is missing is the hat. I wanted to image this one for two years now but never got to it due to clouds, snow, the moon, the cold temperatures, etc… I managed to spend 6 hours on it in 2 cold nights with temperature reaching -25C. There are several distant galaxies in the image, that was a pleasant surprise. You can easily spot them on the image.
