Description:

This is the so-called California Nebula (catalogued as NGC 1499 or Sh2-220), an emission nebula located in the constellation of Perseus whose name derives from its resemblance to the profile of the US state of California in long exposure photographs. It is located at a distance of about 1000 light years from Earth and its emission is due to the excitation of the gas that makes up the nebula by the nearby star Xi Persei (also known as Menkib, top center in my picture).
