Description:

NGC 1532, the large foreground galaxy, and NGC 1531 its small neighbor just to its right, are a pair of interacting galaxies located in the constellation Eridanus. The tidal interaction between these galaxies has disturbed NGC 1532's shape, elongated its form, and has created tidal tails stretching toward NGC 1531. In addition to the production of the tidal tails, the interaction stirred up clouds of gas and dust that have triggered active star formation, visible as purple clumps, along the tails.
