Description:
Semeis 57 - The Propeller Nebula in Cygnus . One of many unusual objects seen in this region. It was cataloged as an HII region in the 1950's by researchers at the Semeiz Observatory in Ukraine. This colorful area is filled with many elements in addition to HII. The "spiral" shaped structure in the center of the image is thought to be outflow from a rapidly rotating source. This source has yet to be identified. This structure can be found about 5 degrees SW of Deneb and not far from Cygnus X-1.
