Description:

The image records two rare atmospheric phenomena observed today in Leiria at 13:07. A 22° solar halo and possibly a circumhorizontal arc. The first is formed when sunlight is refracted by hexagonal ice crystals suspended in high cirrus clouds. The second, visible as an iridescent band in the lower right part of the image, requires very specific conditions: the Sun must be high in the sky and the presence of horizontally oriented ice crystals. The scene frames the Romanesque façade of the Church of São Pedro, built in the 12th century, one of the most emblematic medieval buildings in Leiria. Note: I do not rule out the possibility that the second phenomenon is part of a 46° halo, given the angular position. However, the intense colors and the time of day favor the first interpretation.
