Description:

This image of the California Nebula (NGC 1499) in Perseus consists of about 10 hours of exposure through three narrowband filters (H-alpha, O-III, and S-II) rendered as a color image using the Hubble palette (red=S-II, green=H-a, blue=O-III). Variations in the distribution of the three elements (Sulfur, Hydrogen and Oxygen) throughout the nebula give rise to this very colorful scene.
