New Horizons will fly by Pluto on July 14, 2015.

S&T: Casey Reed

When the New Horizons spacecraft reaches Pluto in 2015, it will give us our first close-up look at new planet since Voyager 2 flew by Neptune in 1989. What will we find? That's the beauty of it — nobody knows.

In an interview with S&T editor in chief Robert Naeye, New Horizons' principal investigator Alan Stern discusses the trials and joys of working on a mission that takes decades to bear fruit. Was it all worth it? Of course it was! The mission will revolutionize our knowledge of the solar system in ways that we can't even imagine now.
