As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.

Big Lagoon State Park Star Gazes for the Summer of 2026

The members of the Escambia Amateur Astronomers invite you join us at our monthly deep sky gazes at Big Lagoon State Park, on the Florida-Alabama state line jusg west of Pensacola. Camping sites are available, and the skies are dark to be so easily accessble by car and boat for the public. We host our gazes on the Saturday closest to the third quarter moon for the darkest skies. Our observers provide both visual scopes for planetary views, and digital imaging with eVscopes, Dwarf Labs, and See Stars. We provide sky maps for the current evening sky, and as your see in our photo, conduct constellation tours with our sky interpretation. We teach folks to use their smartphones to access our scopes, edit their own astrophhotos, and also use the Nocture and night sky aps to record the Milky Way with their smart phones. Our sky interpreter is imaged with her green laser pointer, with the Sagittarius Milky Way in the background, hand held with iPhone 12s. This state park gate closes at sunset, and has a $6 per car fee, but you will get a night to remember under our dark skies! This summer, we will use the boat ramp parking lot to set up our gaze.
