Upcoming Astronomy Events

As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.
You’ll also see online events offered here.
And if you’d like free copies of Sky & Telescope‘s Let’s Go Stargazing flyer or door prizes for your next star party, you can fill out this form.

Hot Jupiters, Super Puffs, and Lava Planets, Oh My!

April 28, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm EDT

The successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) heralds a new age in the exploration of our Universe, and in particular the study of exoplanets. JWST's large aperture and wide and continuous wavelength coverage will allow for the detection and characterization of a host of atmospheric phenomena on exoplanets through observations of exoplanet transits, secondary eclipses, and phase curves, which will, in turn, revolutionize our understanding of exoplanet formation processes and habitability.

In this Neighborhood Lecture, Carnegie Staff Scientist Peter Gao will introduce you to some of the Galaxy's most enigmatic exoplanets and highlight the exoplanet observations that will take place in the first year of JWST operations. The studies target astronomical objects from giant planets down to worlds smaller than Earth and sample temperatures from star-like to those conducive to life.
