Upcoming Astronomy Events

As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.
You’ll also see online events offered here.
And if you’d like free copies of Sky & Telescope‘s Let’s Go Stargazing flyer or door prizes for your next star party, you can fill out this form.

Public Talk on the Upcoming Eclipses of the Sun

August 28, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Astronomer Andrew Fraknoi will give an illustrated, nontechnical talk on
“Two Upcoming Eclipses of the Sun 2023 & 2024”
at the Commonwealth Club of California
110 The Embarcadero (in the Rock Auditorium)
San Francisco, CA 94105

To register, go to: https://www.commonwealthclub.org/events/2023-08-28/andrew-fraknoi-two-eclipses-sun
(NOTE: You do NOT need to be a member of the club to attend.)

YOU CAN ATTEND IN PERSON OR VIRTUALLY ON ZOOM
Those attending in person will get a free pair of safe-viewing eclipse glasses courtesy of the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation!

Whether you attend in person or by Zoom, you can order your ticket to include Prof. Fraknoi’s children’s book on eclipses, When the Sun Goes Dark (domestic U.S. shipping only.) Those attending in person can get copies autographed.

Two eclipses of the Sun are coming to North America during the 2023–24 school year—an annular (“ring of fire”) eclipse on October 14, 2023 and a total eclipse on April 8, 2024. People in two narrow paths will have the full eclipse experience each time. Everyone else (an estimated 500 million people, including all of us in the Bay Area) will see a nice partial eclipse, where the Moon covers a good part of the Sun.

Andrew Fraknoi will describe how eclipses come to be (and why they are total only on Earth), what scientists learn during eclipses, exactly when and where the eclipses of 2023 and 2024 will be best visible, and how to observe the eclipses and the Sun safely. (In October 2023, in the Bay Area, 83% of the Sun will be covered.)

Cosponsored by Wonderfest, the Bay Area Beacon of Science.

The front desk has complimentary masks for members and guests who would like one.

Founded in 1903, the Commonwealth Club of California is a nonprofit public forum.
