Upcoming Astronomy Events

As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.
You’ll also see online events offered here.
And if you’d like free copies of Sky & Telescope‘s Let’s Go Stargazing flyer or door prizes for your next star party, you can fill out this form.

What's Up in the Fall Sky? (A Free, Virtual Lecture)

October 12, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Free

Registration is required: https://bit.ly/FallSkyTalk

What makes the days shorter, the nights longer, and the air cooler? What heavenly bodies and celestial events can we observe for the remainder of the year? What is an annular solar eclipse, what can we expect to see during the one that will occur on October 14, 2023, and how can we safely view it? In this free virtual (Zoom) event, we will discuss the seasons, such special events as meteor showers, as well as the planets and constellations that will be visible.

Hamptons Observatory Senior Educator, William Francis Taylor, MSc, has been a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador since 2014, lecturing about the universe around us and sharing his love of the heavens by giving guided tours of the sky through telescopes. He is a life-long East End resident.

Hamptons Observatory would like to thank the Shelter Island Public Library for co-hosting this event, and William Francis Taylor for sharing his expertise.

Hamptons Observatory (HO), a 501(c)(3) NYS nonprofit that relies on public support, has served the community since 2005. Its mission: to foster interest in science, particularly astronomy, through educational programs. Lectures, star parties, portable planetarium shows and other events are held, often in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations. Hamptons Observatory offers its programs free-of-charge (although donations are much appreciated) so that everyone can learn about and enjoy the universe around them. To join our email list for event notices, email: [email protected]. To make a tax-deductible donation to support our mission, please go to www.HamptonsObservatory.org and click on Support Us.
