Some of the most captivating and other-worldly astronomy images can be found in this gallery of galaxy and nebula pictures. True-color photos show the explosion of stars in the Orion Nebula, a favorite target for astrophotographers, and filters highlight specific features in gas clouds and distant galaxies. Because filters can be "assigned" a color, their use gives astrophotographers a little room for artistic license in determining a nebula's color palette. At the same time, the filters allow viewers to expand beyond "true color" to see invisible information, such as the location of ionized hydrogen, silicon, or oxygen gas within the nebula. This 2-panel mosaic by S&T Gallery contributor Mark Germani shows the Andromeda Galaxy, which lies approximately 2.5 million light-years away. Each of the two panels that make up this image consist of 7 hours of data. Germani also incorporated a small amount of hydrogen-alpha data from one of his previous images of this galaxy, so as to highlight the hydrogen-rich star formation regions (in pinkish-red).
